Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley recently argued that the Russians are losing the war in Ukraine at the tactical, operational and strategic levels. But that’s more a triumph of wishful thinking over reality.

Russia is evolving its battlefield tactics to adapt to changing conditions. It’s applying unrelenting pressure against Ukrainian defenses along an 800-mile front, forcing Ukraine to commit valuable reserves to fortify the line. It’s slowly wearing Ukrainian forces down. It’s not surprising that Russia is poised to capture the strategically important city of Bakhmut, which Ukraine has desperately tried to defend.

Meanwhile, the U.S. and its western allies have tried to isolate Russia economically and politically on the global stage. But as the attached article explains, these efforts have largely failed. In fact, much of the “global south” actually supports Russia.
