New law targets people who leak classified information – Politics – NZ Herald News

KW: Wake up folks! This is the most significant piece of legislation of John Keys career. People who expose possible criminal actions or cover up of our government will be silenced with imprisonment.

The denial that it is not spurred on from the Edward Snowden leaks is really lame because ‘nice Mr Prime Minister John Key’ is ensuring, without the merest murmur of objection from a complicit and compliant press, that our government is going to be able to spy on anyone to protect itself from the array of embarrassing information that could be revealed by someone who believes that our government could be or is acting inappropriately, dishonestly or criminally in its operations. Lets not fool ourselves, governments lie to us especially about foreign policy issues because we are expected to obey the U.S. ‘policies’ but like Snowden has revealed to the U.S. public exposing the lies, warmongering, spying activities on its own citizens and corruption of the U.S. government we are now all being targeted for hushing up potential criminality. Don’t think it won’t happen because it will. The fact that this report is called ‘independent’ becasue it’s authors were Michael Cullen and Patsy Reddy is a foil, they are deeply entwined in the establishment.

Recall how after one of his U.S. trips (or golf with Obama was it?) Key came back to N.Z. parroting about how Bashar al- Assad in Syria ‘must go’. This is U.S. foreign objectives repeated, we in N.Z. have no business to be making such pitiful and disgraceful statements like this, all Key was doing was repeating what he was told to repeat to New Zealanders about America’s criminal wars in the Middle East. I for one would like to know more about what our government gets up to on our behalf spending our taxes on dirty and disruptive wars in countries we should only be trying to help by increasing trade and being honourable towards them letting them sort out their own issues in their own time and hopefully showing them a better way forward. Not possible when our closest ‘ally’ is a warmongering machine.

But it’s not only this type of situation. There are local possibilities. Right now here in Havelock North Hawke’s Bay there is a water crisis due to the water supply becoming infected with caplobacta virus that has caused the whole community to become ill. Thousands are ill, some critically. One could easily imagine that similar larger issues of governmental and local governmental incompetence could easily be covered up and glossed over with false information issued and bullets dodged. Cover-ups are the issue here and we have no idea of just where, how and why cover-ups will occur. Someone who thinks that these issues should be exposed and the government called into question now faces prison should they divulge such information. Yes it is quite possible.

This is what this legislation is targeting – silence.

People who leak Government information will be targeted with a new offence that carries a maximum sentence of five years in jail.Prime Minister John Key has announced legislation that will also let…
